Fourth session of the program focused on Developing KPIs and SPIs using Comprehensive Data for Progress Monitoring

On 22 April 2025, the fourth session of the Road Safety Capacity Building Program webinar series was delivered online to more than 140 participants. The series, Data in Action: Using Global and Local Data Sources to Enhance Policy, Investment, and Implementation, is being co-delivered by the Asia Pacific Road Safety Observatory (APRSO), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the CAREC program.  

The fourth session of the program focused on Developing KPIs and SPIs using Comprehensive Data for Progress Monitoring and featured presentations and case studies from a range of global and regional experts. 

In particular, this session focused on:

  • Why progress monitoring is important for a country’s road safety performance and tracking of strategy and action plan rollout

  • How to develop Key and Safety Performance Indicators using different data sources

  • Two case studies of KPI and SPI development and use

Director of Lӧsningar, Dr. Johan Strandroth, provided the lead presentation, and presented in detail on the process of planning, back and forward casting, and how to use a range of data to inform road safety indicators. Senior Researcher at ITARDA, Toru Kiuchi, provided a direct example on the use of data to monitor progress in Japan and outlined the role and establishment of ITARDA as a potential model for adoption across the region. Chief Executive Officer of Agilysis Limited, Richard Owen, then contributed a presentation focused on ongoing work with ADB that focuses on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to support the development and monitoring of road safety progress. Director of Lӧsningar, Jessica Truong, moderated the session, which also included many questions from the participants and a series of topical poll questions.
