Civil society organizations have been recognized as one of the core stakeholders that hold a shared responsibility for road safety action in the United Nations Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021 - 2030. The plan outlines that ‘civil society groups that can help fill important gaps in different areas of road safety, as well as help implement the policy measures necessary to reduce road trauma’.
In addition, the Global Plan explains that ‘civil society can be an important source of road safety information for the community and governments; help ensure government accountability by empowering communities on road safety issues and ensuring good governance; and help push for the achievement of the road safety Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’.
