Second Series of the Road Safety Capacity-Building Program Launched

On 13 May 2025, the second series of the Road Safety Capacity-Building Program webinar series was launched in alignment with the 8th UN Global Road Safety Week. Titled Innovations in Safe and Sustainable Transport: Road Safety as part of Liveable & Resilient Cities, the series is co-presented by the Asia Pacific Road Safety Observatory (APRSO), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the CAREC program. 

 

The first session of the program, which gathered 117 online participants, provided an overview of the co-benefits of safer pedestrian and cycling policies and investment, aligned with the objectives of the 8th UN Global Road Safety Week.

 

Key discussion points included:

✅ Health, safety and climate benefits of safer walking and cycling policies and investment

✅ Opportunities and pathways for integrated, multimodal land use planning and development to encourage cycling and walking

✅ Case study examples

 

Bronwen Thornton, Chief Executive Officer of Walk21 Foundation, emphasized the importance of creating healthy and sustainable communities through walking and cycling. Monica Olyslagers, Global Innovation Manager and Cities Specialist of iRAP, spoke about designing safer cities for walking and cycling. Priti Gautam, Senior Transport Specialist and Road Safety Lead at the ADB, discussed ADB’s contributions to improving walking and cycling infrastructure across Asia and the Pacific. The session was moderated by Jessica Truong, Director of Lӧsningar, and included active participant engagement through Q&A and topical polls.
