APRSO and ADB Launch Safe System Maturity Assessment in Armenia
From May 27 to June 4, the Asia-Pacific Road Safety Observatory (APRSO) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) are on a mission in Armenia to tackle critical road safety issues and support the ADB’s Resilient and Inclusive Road Sector Improvement Project II.
As a member of APRSO, Armenia is actively implementing road safety measures to combat a rising toll on its roads, with some estimates indicating one road death every six hours and costs approaching 6% of GDP annually.
During this mission, ADB’s Senior Transport Specialist and Road Safety Lead, Priti Gautam, along with Senior Road Safety Management Expert, Dr. Soames Job, are meeting with representatives from the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, Yerevan Municipality PIU, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Health, Ambulance Service, National Road Safety Council, Automobile Club and other key partners. Discussions focus on Safe Systems topics, including:
- Current road safety activities, performance, and mandates
- Road management and planning
- Enforcement, vehicle standards, and registration
- Driver licensing and insurance schemes
- Infrastructure development
- Post-crash response
- Coordination and management of road safety data
The mission will conclude with a Road Safety Workshop on June 3, bringing together government officials, international organizations, and other stakeholders involved in road safety initiatives.
