On 28 April 2025, an expert team from APRSO and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) commenced a series of road safety activities in Fiji.

Fiji is a member country of APRSO and is working to address its road trauma issue, which the Asian Transport Observatory has found accounts for 13.5 deaths per 100,000 population and has an impact of 3% on the country’s GDP.

To help efforts in the country, and to inform future areas of APRSO support, the team is conducting Crash Data Reviews and Safe System Maturity Assessments in collaboration with a range of key Government agencies.

  • The Crash Data Review will assess existing and planned data management to make practical recommendations for improving these systems.
  • The Safe System Maturity Assessment will utilize the global best practice tool developed by ADB (https://www.adb.org/publications/assessing-national-road-safety-management-systemst) to provide an assessment of country level progress in adoption of the Safe System approach for road safety.

The team of experts includes Senior Transport Specialist and Road Safety Lead Priti Gautam, Senior Road Safety Management Specialist Dr. Soames Job and Road Safety Specialist Dr. Tana Tan. The team commenced the mission with meetings at the ADB Pacific Subregional Office and Ministry of Finance and will meet key representatives from the Fiji Roads Authority, Land Transport Authority, Fiji Police and more agencies during the week.
